Why the Honda Civic Is the North American Car of the Year – Again
Redesigning the 2022 Civic has turned out to be a winning strategy for Honda. The Civic recently won the prestigious North American Car of the Year award for the third time (2008 & 2016). This also is the fourth time in six years that a Honda has been in the winner’s circle: Besides the Civic’s 2016 win, the Honda Accord won in 2018 and the Honda Ridgeline won North American Truck of the Year in 2017).
This year’s other finalists were the Lucid Air and Volkswagen Golf R/Golf GTI, and Honda triumphed with 241 points compared to the Air’s 170 points. The judges included 50 independent American and Canadian automotive journalists who base their decision on “segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction, and value for the dollar.”
Kelley Blue Book Executive Editorial Director Jack Nerad said the reason the 2022 Honda Civic was chosen is that it “… combines just about every positive attribute you can think of – low-cost, high fuel efficiency, utility, comfort, dependability, and fun to drive, among them.”
The 2022 Honda Civic is the 11th generation model of the iconic compact that made its North American debut in the early 1970s. It was redesigned from the ground up to feature a more rigid body structure, sleek and sporty design and top-class interior space and comfort, outstanding safety features, advanced technology, and sophisticated interior. It is America’s most popular vehicle with younger and first-time buyers.
The Civic comes in a range of variants, with the base model equipped with a 158-hp engine and the Civic Si with a 205-hp VTEC engine and manual transmission. When the turbocharged Civic Type R is released it is expected to have more than 300 hp.
“The Honda Civic has long set the standard by which other compact cars are measured and this all-new Civic raised that bar in every conceivable way,” said American Honda’s Assistant VP of Honda National Sales Michael Kistemaker. And while Honda is a Japanese company, the Civic is built in North America at Greensburg, Indiana, and Alliston, Ontario.
