VIDEO: Meet Our Brave Children’s Hospital Colorado Ambassador
Children like Trinity are the reason that Schomp Automotive raises funds every year for the Children’s Hospital Colorado Burn Center. This year marks the 28th year for our Children’s Hospital Colorado Sale – Monday, July 23 through Saturday, July 28. We will donate a portion of the profits from the sale of each vehicle to the Burn Center. Since 1990, Schomp has contributed more than $350,000 to Children’s Hospital Colorado. The money goes toward caring for children like Trinity who have suffered life-threatening burns.
Trinity’s story is heart-wrenching. She was a lively 12-year-old, living with her family in Granby, Colorado in April 2017. She was with friends in a backyard one evening when one of them started a bonfire. Some of the gasoline and oil he threw on the fire splashed on Trinity’s clothes and when the wind blew flames in her direction, they caught fire. Trinity was severely burned and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Colorado, site of the state’s only pediatric burn program.
Trinity has struggled to adjust to the burns, which covered 25 percent of her body. Her treatment has required several skin graft surgeries and intensive rehabilitation, including physical and occupational therapy. Her family relocated to Commerce City so she would be close to the hospital. She attends school at the Medical Day Treatment Program that integrates her treatment with academics.
Trinity has proved her resilience. “I was a very outgoing girl. I had a lot of friends,” Trinity said of the life she lived before her burns. Now, because of the scarring on her face and upper body, she’s had a big adjustment. “One of the toughest things I’ve had to go through since the accident is going out in public places and learning to not get scared or shy,” she says. “It’s okay to be different.”
Trinity has paid it forward by becoming a mentor to other burn patients. She is one of the 18 children that her caregivers nominated this year to be a Children’s Hospital Colorado Patient Ambassador and Schomp is thrilled to be able to honor Trinity as the face of this annual fundraising event.
The annual Children’s Hospital Colorado Sale is our most significant and emotion-driven sale, and while it has a very serious purpose, there are fun activities planned throughout the week on our Highlands Ranch campus, including kids’ safety demonstrations by local firefighters, appearances by local radio and sports celebrities, food and music.
